Szczecin: Rhenus acquires majority stake in bulk cargo terminal

The logistics company Rhenus has acquired an additional 58.5% of the shares in the Polish port terminal Bulk Cargo – Port of Szczecin.

This makes the Rhenus Group the main shareholder in the terminal. The investment is intended to pave the way for further activities in Szczecin.

The transaction took place in October 2024. Rhenus has held a total of 98.5% of the shares in the terminal since then. The company had already acquired the first 40% in 2022. Rhenus can already look back on a 30-year history in Szczecin and employs around 3,500 people in Poland.

“The potential of this port is immense”

“The Port of Szczecin, with its great importance for the European waterways, is also of enormous relevance for the Rhenus network,” said Michael de Reese, Head of the Rhenus Port Logistics Division. “The potential of this port for environmentally friendly supply chains for the Polish, Czech and eastern German markets is immense.”

The port authority of the seaports of Szczecin and Świnoujście has invested in several improvement measures at the port in recent years, such as deepening the navigation channel and reinforcing the quay walls. “We are therefore planning to build on these previous investments and further develop the port infrastructure and the handling equipment and technology at the Port of Szczecin in a future-proof manner,” Michael de Reese continues.

Rhenus is expanding its presence in Poland

Bulk Cargo is the largest terminal operator at the Port of Szczecin and handles 4 million tons of goods every year. The terminal has eleven berths and 3.5 km of quay wall. The Baltic port’s services include the handling of bulk and general cargo with special equipment, storage, stevedoring and transportation to the hinterland via inland waterways, road and rail.

While in the past the port was primarily known for handling coal and ore for the local coal mines, steelworks and coking plants, today Szczecin is a multifunctional port with capacities for handling bulk cargo, breakbulk and liquid goods.
