Successful tests: Evergreen equips fleet with Nexuswave

Evergreen will rely on the Nexuswave connectivity service across its fleet in future. The Inmarsat service is intended to accelerate the digitalization of the fleet.

The Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen will be relying on a new software solution for cyber security and connectivity in future. The entire fleet will be equipped with Nexuswave, a connectivity service from Viasat company Inmarsat.

The new program is intended to accelerate digitalization across the fleet and simplify crew communication. Following successful tests, Nexuswave is now to be introduced as part of the “Evergreen IT” modernization programme. Among other things, the software will offer the crew high data speeds, unlimited volume and constant availability – “Internet access just like at home”, according to Inmarsat. Ship operations will benefit from a scalable platform for predictive analytics and fully integrated IoT (Internet of Things).

“The fleet-wide rollout of Inmarsat NexusWave underscores our commitment to the well-being of our seafarers and operational excellence,” said Evergreen on the rollout of the software. “At the same time, it provides the platform to continue to innovate for our customers. We are convinced that Nexuswave, as a reliable, scalable and secure connectivity solution, will support the digitalization and future growth of our fleet.”

Gert-Jan Panken, Vice President Maritime at Viasat, commented: “Evergreen is setting new standards for modern, data-driven shipping. By transitioning the entire fleet to NexusWave, the company will have a unified, managed connectivity solution for crew and ship operations based on global coverage and secure infrastructure. We are proud to deepen our partnership and provide a platform that will grow with Evergreen’s ambitions today and in the future.”

Evergreen is the largest container shipping company in Taiwan, ranking seventh globally with 1.95 million TEU, just behind ONE (2.08 million TEU) and well ahead of Korean shipping company HMM (1.027 million TEU). The company’s fleet currently comprises almost 240 ships, of which around 160 are owned by the company itself. According to Alphaliner data, the order book currently contains 53 ships with a capacity of 834,000 TEU. As recently as October, the shipping company placed a new order for 14 container ships of 14,000 TEU each with two shipyards in China and South Korea.
