This year, the international shipbuilding trade fair SMM will introduce a new feature: For the first time, all conferences will be freely accessible on open stages.
The SMM conference programme will focus on topics such as decarbonisation, digitalisation, recruiting, maritime security, and defence. This year, all conferences will be moved to the “Transition Stages” in the exhibition halls, which are freely accessible to everyone. There will be four stages in total: a “Green Stage,” “Open Stage,” “Cruise & Ferry Stage,” and a “Digital & Security Stage.”
TAMM Media supports SMM conference program
The conference program at SMM 2024 is also supported by the Schiffahrts-Verlag HANSA and the Mittler Report Verlag – both companies of TAMM Media.
The “Maritime Future Summit” will take place on 4 September under the auspices of HANSA. The topic is digitalisation – and the role of AI in particular. Under the motto “Smart is Green”, numerous experts from this field will come together.
Dimitry Ponkaratov, Director at Siemens Digital Industries Software UK, will explain how Digital Twins can save fuel. Helle Vines Ertsås knows the benefits of AI-based ship hull management. The Global Category Manager of coating specialist Jotun will be presenting an innovative solution for ships operating in areas with a high risk of fouling: “We first predict the degree of fouling using data-based algorithms; we then confirm this with a visual inspection. If necessary, our ‘Hull Skater’ is then used on the ship’s hull,” says Ertsås. The HullSkater is a robot that removes individual bacteria and the biofilm before the macrofouling settles.
Amy Parkes from Arcsiela Partner LLP explains the benefits that AI can bring to ship operations. The machine learning expert specialises in modelling big data algorithms and develops AI methods for optimising ships. The “Maritime Future Summit” invites interested participants to the Digital & Security Stage in Hall B6 on 4 September.
On the same day, the “Maritime Start-ups Germany ” will also be selected on this stage following a pitch competition. As was the case two years ago, HANSA will once again be on board as a media partner.
MS&D: Conference on maritime security and defence
In addition to the latest trends in naval shipbuilding, MS&D will also focus on geostrategic topics. Mittler Report Verlag will be on board with its accompanying MS&D magazine.
Conference participants include former Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defence Igor Kabanenko and Jyh-Shyang Sheu from the Taiwan Institute for National Defence and Security Research. In conversation with Sarah Kirchberger, Director of the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University, the two will provide first-hand security policy assessments on two crisis and war theatres.
Maritime security and the protection of maritime infrastructures in the new era are the focus of the management consultant and reserve corvette captain Moritz Brake: “The changed security situation requires answers from society as a whole and emphasises the increasing responsibility of private operators of critical maritime infrastructures. Without an adapted security concept and resilience, no business model in the maritime sector will remain competitive.”
Retired Australian Major General Mick Ryan, an expert at the Center for Strategic & International Studies, explains what contribution navies can make to complex operations. At the Maritime Innovation Challenge, innovative small companies and start-ups pitch for the best innovations and technologies in the field of maritime security and defence. Along the Security & Defence Route you will find dual-use exhibitors as well as shipyards and suppliers with a focus on building and equipping ships for navies and coast guards.
The two-day MS&D conference will take place on 5 and 6 September on the Digital & Security Stage in Hall B6. Click here for the complete conference program of this year’s SMM.
