Singapore: New gantry crane collapses during delivery

A rare incident occurred at Tuas Port in Singapore: a newly delivered STS crane has collapsed.

Videos circulating online show the extent of the damage. Fortunately, no one was injured. Crane collapses at ports are uncommon and typically occur due to collisions with vessels. However, something even more unusual happened at Tuas Port – a major new terminal project in Singapore: the newly delivered STS (ship-to-shore) crane collapsed while still being erected. Footage videos of the wrecked structure is being widely shared on X.

Terminals in Singapore remain operational

According to reports, the new crane “toppled over” around 1 p.m. local time on Sunday during the delivery process. There was no active work on the quay at the time, and no injuries or fatalities were reported. According to the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore, no nearby infrastructure or equipment was damaged. All berths operated by PSA Singapore remain accessible, and the incident has not disrupted port operations or expansion plans. The MPA and PSA are currently investigating the cause of the accident and are working with other authorities on the damage assessment and repair.

Tuas Port is situated upstream from the current Port of Singapore and is the world’s largest fully automated container terminal. It was designed to accommodate the rising demands of global trade, and the port strengthens Singapore’s role as a major transshipment hub.

In February, Tuas Port, which has been operational since September 2022, reached a milestone by handling a total of 10 million TEUs. Over the next two decades, the Port of Singapore plans to shift all container operations to Tuas, freeing up valuable port space in the city center for other urban development projects.
