Shortsea market leader Wilson backs German start-up Tilla

Wilson, one of Europe’s largest short sea shipping companies, will be using software from Berlin-based start-up Tilla Technologies to manage all crew changes on 101 ships in its fleet from May.

According to Tilla Technologies, the reason for Wilson ‘s decision is the successful use of the solution at Stödig Ship Management, which manages the crew for parts of the Wilson fleet. The platform for crew changes has delivered convincing, consistent results. These include double-digit cost savings, increased productivity and high user satisfaction.

According to the company, Wilson operates one of the largest short-sea fleets in Europe and plays a key role in the region’s industrial logistics. The company transports around 13 million tons of dry cargo annually and calls at over 10,000 ports. Its fleet consists mainly of mini bulkers with a carrying capacity of 1,500 to 8,500 DWT. As the ships call at both large hubs and smaller ports throughout Europe, transparent, efficient and flexible crew change management is essential for smooth operations.

More transparency and less manual work for crewing teams

According to Tilla Technologies, Wilson can expect a significant reduction in crewing costs through the optimization of voyage planning and an overview of third-party service providers. The platform automates manual processes and gives crewing teams full visibility of schedules, bookings and costs. Crew members can save up to one hour per day and focus on more important tasks.

“We expect Tilla to simplify processes, reduce costs and give our teams more time to focus on the really important things,” says Bjørn Thore Seljelid, Head of Crewing at Wilson. “The ability to plan and manage crew changes in one system, with real-time data and full transparency, is an important step in our digitalization efforts.”

A scalable solution for one of Europe’s largest short-haul fleets

“Wilson is a forward-thinking company with very high standards for efficiency and reliability,” says Niklas Weidmann, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Tilla Technologies. “They recognized early on that crew decisions have a major impact on performance. We look forward to supporting their teams with automation, better data and tools that simplify day-to-day operations.”

Automating the entire crew change process

According to the company, Tilla’s software connects all relevant data sources – ship schedules, crew databases, port agents, real-time flight data and more – and automates the entire crew change workflow from planning and booking to documentation, cost control and invoicing. The platform can be integrated into existing crew management systems and works with over 15 travel agencies worldwide. It is scalable and helps companies to reduce manual effort, improve transparency and make better decisions in the long term.

About Tilla Technologies
Tilla Technologies was founded in Berlin in 2021 to optimize and improve the efficiency of crew change in shipping, which is still one of the least digitized areas of work in shipping, but accounts for a large part of operating costs.
To this end, the start-up has developed a platform to make optimal decisions about crew changes and automate workflows with real-time data and integrations. By covering the entire crew change process, from planning to flight booking and reporting, it aims to reduce crew change costs and improve the productivity of crew teams.
