The shipping company Seaspan Energy has taken delivery of the bunker vessel “S1067”, which was built at the Chinese shipyard Nantong CIMC SOE.
The LNG bunker vessel has a capacity of 7,600 m³, dual-fuel operation, a direct current distribution system and two type C cargo tanks.
It is also equipped with two azimuth thrusters for main propulsion, two compressor systems for handling boil-off gas, a subcooling unit to maintain tank pressure and three distribution stations for maximum bunkering flexibility.
According to the classification society Bureau Veritas (BV), the certification of LNG bunker vessels is crucial to enable shipowners and operators to continue to comply with legal requirements while meeting the growing demand for LNG in the industry. As the sector accelerates its decarbonisation efforts, LNG represents a viable transition fuel that reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional marine fuel.
BV classification for 50% of Seaspan orders
BV continues to promote the development of low-carbon alternative fuels by bringing its LNG expertise – based on the classification of around 35% of the world’s bunker vessels in operation and around 50% of the current order book – to bear on the development of methanol and ammonia production.
“We have a long-standing partnership with CIMC SOE, which is known for its innovations in specialised shipbuilding, including cargo tanks, topside modules and small liquefied natural gas carriers,” said Alex Gregg-Smith, Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific (APA) at Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore. “This latest delivery of three 7,600m³ LNG bunker vessels is a great example of our shared commitment to drive sustainability and support the decarbonisation of the maritime sector.”
Shen Lintao, Deputy General Manager of CIMC SOE’s Shipbuilding Department, said: “After numerous careful adjustments and rigorous inspections, the ‘S1067’ is the result of the close cooperation and joint efforts of the company and its partners. Since the launching ceremony on July 1, all team members have worked meticulously and tirelessly, demonstrating CIMC SOE’s outstanding technical strength, innovation and spirit of collaboration.”
In his speech, Harly Penner, President of Seaspan Energy, expressed his sincere gratitude to the leadership and the entire team of CIMC SOE. Seaspan Energy attaches great importance to the valuable cooperative relationship with CIMC SOE. He also emphasised that Seaspan Energy will “cherish” the three LNG bunker vessels delivered by CIMC SOE and will ensure that these vessels always remain in the same good condition as when they were delivered.
BV is working on further projects with CIMC SOE
BV has already worked with CIMC SOE on several major projects, including three 16,500 m³ LPG tankers and six 27,500 m³ LNG dual-fuel tankers. In the future, the classification society plans to continue working with CIMC SOE on projects including two 12,500 m³ LNG bunker vessels, two 24,000 m³ Liquefied Ethylene Gas (LEG) tankers and new SPP40 platform supply vessels.
