Sea-LNG: More LNG ships, fewer emissions

The SEA-LNG industry alliance believes that the use of LNG as a marine fuel will make significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Before the meeting of the IMO’s Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) , the organization recently emphasized that technological developments and the increasing use of biomethane and e-methane in particular are accelerating the transition to more climate-friendly shipping.

According to Sea-LNG, energy suppliers have been able to reduce well-to-wake emissions by around a quarter over the past six years. Engine manufacturers have almost halved methane slip, and the first solutions for complete avoidance are emerging. At the same time, the number of LNG-powered ships has risen sharply.

At London International Shipping Week , classification societies such as ABS and DNV emphasized the role of LNG and the prospects offered by bio-LNG and e-methane. At the same time, the alliance warns against regulatory measures without clear guidelines.

“LNG delivers measurable emission reductions today and opens up a realistic path to net zero,” explained Sea LNG Chairman Peter Keller. COO Steve Esau referred to studies by Sphera and Rystad Energy, which confirm a continuous decline in well-to-tank emissions. Sea-LNG plans to present a new lifecycle analysis in the second quarter of 2026.

Sea-LNG was founded in 2016 and brings together stakeholders from various sectors. Its members include shipping companies, port operators, LNG suppliers, infrastructure companies, engine manufacturers, classification societies and financial service providers. The companies are working together to communicate the benefits of LNG as a sustainable, scalable key technology for marine fuels and to initiate independent research into issues such as emissions, returns on investment and infrastructure issues in the industry
