Schottel supplies propulsion systems for Polish frigates

The Polish naval shipyard “PGZ Stocznia Wojenna” in Gdynia is currently building multi-purpose frigates of the Miecznik class. The German manufacturer Schottel will supply the propulsion systems for these ships.

According to the company, high quality, flexible adaptability to special requirements and high availability in operation are key factors for the propulsion systems of naval vessels. The manufacturer’s TransverseThruster meets these requirements with improved manoeuvrability.

A total of three Miecznik-class multi-purpose frigates are being built at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna. Each of the ships will be equipped with a shock-capable STT 4 with an input power of 925 kW and a propeller diameter of 2.0 meters. With a combined system of engine and frequency-controlled soft starter, the entire scope of delivery of the STTs comprises a complete functional unit from a single source.

Schottel also supplies seal monitoring system

Each STT is equipped with Schottel’s LeaCon, a seal monitoring system certified by a classification society. It provides safe and reliable protection against contamination of the seawater by operating fluids.

Separate seals to the seawater and to the gearbox side ensure that both incoming seawater and gear oil escaping from the system are collected in an intermediate chamber.

LeaCon is also used to monitor the condition of the seals so that operational wear can be detected at an early stage and unscheduled maintenance work can be avoided. The drives equipped with the LeaCon system meet strict environmental requirements, according to the company.
