Schottel expands into Great Britain

German propulsion specialist Schottel makes a strategic move into the UK market and opens a new branch for its international network.

Schottel UK will focus primarily on the sale of new build and retrofit projects, according to the group, which is headquartered in Spay am Rhein. The aim is to be closer to designers, shipyards and owners throughout the entire specification and procurement process.

“The UK market offers significant growth potential – particularly in the offshore vessels, dredgers, ferries, tugs and marine vessels segments,” explains Roland Schwandt, Deputy CEO of Schottel. “The industry is increasingly looking for innovative technologies to support the transition to climate-neutral shipping. The demand for hybrid and electric propulsion systems as well as tailor-made retrofit solutions for fleet modernization is growing accordingly.”

The Group is active in the manufacturing of propulsion and control systems for ships and offshore applications.

Sebastian Sachs, who has been with the company since 2016, will take over the management of Schottel UK as Managing Director of Schottel in the Netherlands from April 2024. He will continue in this role alongside his new responsibilities. He will be supported by Sales Manager Jordan Soltys, who will remain the central point of contact for customers. The graduate ship designer and naval architect worked as a shipbroker for many years before joining the company in June 2024.

“With this strategic move, we want to move closer to our customers, strengthen our consulting and support for new build and retrofit projects and tap into further potential in this dynamic market,” emphasized Sachs. Soltys added: “Schottel UK is much more than just a commercial site – it is a clear signal for a long-term commitment. Our aim is to build trusted and sustainable partnerships in the UK maritime sector and play an active role in shaping its future.”

Service business remains with Stone Marine Services

While Schottel UK will focus primarily on new build and retrofit projects in the future, the company will continue to rely on its long-standing partner Stone Marine Services, based near Edinburgh, for after-sales service. “By working closely with the experienced team at Stone Marine Services, we ensure that our customers in the UK receive competent local support in the areas of service, spare parts and repairs – based on sound technical expertise and an established reputation in the UK marine industry,” says Soltys.
