Sanmar launches world’s first methanol escort tugboat

The Turkish specialist shipyard Sanmar Shipyards has launched the first of two new dual-fuel methanol escort tugs for Kotug Canada. The vessels are to be deployed in Vancouver after delivery.

Turkish shipyard Sanmar Shipyards has stacked the first of two globally unique dual-fuel methanol escort tugs for Kotug Canada. The joint venture between Kotug International and Horizon Maritime intends to deploy the newbuildings as part of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMEP) to escort tankers from the Port of Vancouver to the Pacific Ocean.

Record-breaking tugs in Canada

“This is one of the most powerful vessels of its kind ever built – and at the same time one that focuses on environmental protection,” emphasizes Ali Gürün, Vice Chairman & CEO of Sanmar.

The tugs are based on the “RAsalvor 4400-DFM” design by Canadian engineering firm Robert Allan. With a bollard pull capacity of 120 tons, they will be the most powerful escort tugs in Canada to date. In addition to high maneuverability, the units will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and underwater noise by using methanol as an alternative fuel.

The project also includes a partnership with the Sc’ianew First Nation from Beecher Bay, whose territory is strategically located along the route. The basis is a “Mutual Benefits Agreement”, which is intended to create economic opportunities, jobs and training opportunities for the community and at the same time integrate indigenous expertise into the shipping operations.

The 44 m long units are designed for harsh operating conditions. In addition to escort duties, they are also suitable for towing voyages, anchoring work, salvage and rescue operations. They also have FFV 1 ABS rated firefighting systems and the largest oil spill response capacity of any tug on the British Columbia coast.

“The world’s first methanol escort tug is not only a milestone for Kotug Canada, but for the entire maritime industry. These vessels prove that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand,” said Ard-Jan Kooren, President & CEO of Kotug International.

Sanmar says it is pursuing a clear strategy to lead the industry into the future with low- and zero-emission tugs. The shipyard already has nine all-electric “ElectRA” harbor tugs in operation in Europe as well as in North and Latin America.
