The multimodal provider Samskip is continuing its network expansion with the launch of the new Spain-UK-Rotterdam service.
The new shortsea container service connects northern Spain with the London economic area and the logistics centre of Rotterdam. Samskip recently established a new office in Bilbao, Spain, to support the recently launched Santander-Dublin-Liverpool service. [ds_preview]
The new service connecting Santander, Tilbury, and Rotterdam will start in the Dutch port on 2 April. It offers customers a weekly Spain-Tilbury-Rotterdam shortsea option, which the company says remains “highly cost-effective compared to road ferry alternatives, while offering greater reliability and significantly lower CO2 emissions per tonne-mile”.
Samskip relies on Santander
Ólafur Orri Ólafsson, Head of Network Optimization & Iberia Trade, says: “This new service, connecting northern Spain with the London economic area and the logistics hub of Rotterdam, will provide our customers with a much improved and reliable service compared to what exists in the region today.” The arrival of the new BMT Santander terminal, which is located in the natural bay of the port of Santander, will give the shipping company a major advantage along the notoriously stormy northern coast on the Bay of Biscay, as the terminal is protected and can operate continuously – even in very strong winds.
Javier Fontaneda, Country Customer Experience Manager, Samskip S.L., added: “With this new service, we as Samskip are extending our reach in the UK and can offer both East and West Coast services to our customers. At the same time, we offer a direct connection from Santander to Rotterdam and can use Rotterdam as a transhipment port to connect our services to the rest of Europe. This is another step towards our goal of providing our customers with a better door-to-door service to the UK and Europe.”
