Salvage of the “Verity” enters the final phase

The salvage of the cargo from the wreck of the “Verity” off Heligoland is almost complete. The next step will be to lift the wreck in two parts.

The salvage operation is entering its final phase. A large part of the cargo, which consisted of steel coils, has now been salvaged, according to the responsible authority GDWS (Generaldirektion Wasserstraßen und Schifffahrt).

The majority of the 187 steel strip rolls had already been transported by barge to a certified recycler in the Netherlands. According to the information provided, only six inaccessible steel strip reels will be removed when the wreck is lifted.

Floating crane to lift “Verity”

In the coming days, all the equipment required to cut up and lift the wreck will be brought to the wreck site. Divers will also be used again to cut up the wreck.

The “Matador 3” floating crane, which can lift loads of up to 1,800 tons, will be used to lift the two wreck sections. The salvage work should be completed by the end of August, according to the GDWS.

On 24 October last year, the coaster “Verity” was wrecked and sank in the German Bight following a collision with the freighter “Polesie“. The wreck lies southwest of Heligoland in a water depth of approx. 37 metres.
