Rolls-Royce Unveils Green Maritime Solutions

Rolls-Royce will present new propulsion, automation and service solutions under the mtu product brand at SMM that support maritime customers in the energy transition while ensuring reliable and efficient fleet operation. These include combustion engines approved and tested for renewable diesel (HVO), exhaust gas aftertreatment systems, hybrid systems, gas engines, automation and bridge systems. Rolls-Royce will also present its concepts for future methanol engines that can be operated CO2-neutrally with green methanol.

The right combination of solutions is a first step on the way to net zero, the company says. This includes technologies such as exhaust gas aftertreatment, but also sustainable fuels. Rolls-Royce offers exhaust aftertreatment systems for mtu Series 2000 and 4000 diesel engines. The main diesel engines are already approved to run on renewable diesel/HVO. Ship operators can save up to 90% CO2 emissions, up to 40% particulate emissions and up to 8% nitrogen oxide emissions by using HVO instead of fossil diesel. Customers, such as ferry fleet operator Golden Gate Ferry in California, have been successfully using HVO for several years.

The current portfolio of Rolls-Royce also includes mtu gas engines for tugs, ferries, push boats and special ships. The gas engine undercuts the nitrogen oxide limits of the current IMO III exhaust gas directive even without exhaust gas aftertreatment, and particulate matter is below the detection limit. Ferry operators, such as the Doeksen shipping company in the Netherlands, particularly appreciate the fact that mtu gas engines are quiet, produce no vibrations, no unpleasant odor and no black smoke. Rolls-Royce has received orders for mtu gas engines as propulsion systems and on-board power generators for a total of eleven ships in Europe and Singapore. For the world’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-hybrid powered tug Rolls-Royce has supplied two mtu 16V 4000 M55RN gas engines to Sembcorp Marine Integrated Yard.

Rolls-Royce supports customers also in hybridizing their propulsion systems. The mtu HybridPropulsionPack combines combustion engine, batteries and electric propulsion offers the possibility of running completely emission-free locally in ports. Since the end of June 2024, the Italian shipping company Liberty Lines in Sicily has been commissioning the first three of a total of nine fast ferries with mtu hybrid propulsion systems.
