Rolls-Royce researches automated shipping

The engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce is cooperating with the Singapore Institute of Technology on research into automated ships.

The aim is to develop an electronic monitoring and fleet management system for harbor tugs, autonomous and hybrid ships.

The partners announced the cooperation at Singapore Maritime Week. The aim of the joint research is to improve the availability and efficiency of fuels. Another goal is to reduce the emissions of the entire fleet through intelligent ship and automation solutions.

The multi-purpose patrol vessel “MPA Guardian” of the Maritime and Port Authority in Singapore serves as the pilot ship. Equipped with two MTU 16V2000 engines, the hybrid vessel will use the “mtu NautIQ Foresight” automation system to collect data and optimize operations before the technology can be used on other vessels, Rolls-Royce announced.

“SIT’s collaboration with Rolls-Royce will drive the future of smart and sustainable maritime operations,” said Susanna Leong, Vice President of Applied Research at the Singapore Insitute of Technology. “This partnership reflects SIT’s commitment to applied research that delivers real-world impact – using AI, advanced analytics and operational monitoring to improve vessel autonomy and fleet performance and reduce CO2 emissions. SIT will bring its expertise in smart systems and sustainability-focused innovation, while working with industry leaders to develop practical solutions that meet the evolving needs of the maritime sector.”

Rolls-Royce relies on research in Singapore

“We see the joint research project as an important step in the further development of autonomous ships and ships with hybrid technologies,” said Kevin Daffey, Senior Vice President of Mobile Automation at Rolls-Royce Power Systems. “Singapore, as a metropolis for sustainable shipping, is the ideal location for this outstanding project with all its progressive institutions that are our partners. We are thus promoting the reduction ofCO2 emissions and supporting our customers with digital systems and even better service in line with our strategic goals.”

Rolls-Royce Power Systems, a company belonging to MTU Friedrichshafen, achieved record results last year. The engine manufacturer’s adjusted sales rose by 11% to $5.05 billion, surpassing the $5 billion mark for the first time. Sales in the energy systems business grew particularly strongly.
