Rina certifies battery system from Tesvolt Ocean

The Italian classification society Rina has approved the “Kaptein NMC Compass Core” battery system from Tesvolt Ocean for use in inland and maritime shipping.

The Italian classification society Rina has approved the “Kaptein NMC Compass Core” battery system from Tesvolt Ocean for use in inland and maritime shipping. Following successful functional and stress tests, the Lübeck-based manufacturer announced that the system has now been officially approved for use.

The module was specially developed for electric drives on smaller ships and is particularly suitable for retrofitting in confined spaces. At 5.9 kg/kWh, it is significantly lighter than conventional battery systems in the maritime sector. According to the manufacturer, it also enables a charging speed with a C-rate of 4 – currently a top value in the industry.

The “Kaptein NMC Compass-Core” modules can be installed individually and in almost any position. Thanks to their compact dimensions (60.5 cm long, 14.9 cm high), they can also be accommodated in niches. Additional cooling is not required.

“Tesvolt Ocean’s protection concepts are cleverly integrated and make an important contribution to system safety on board,” said Patrizio Di Francesco, Chief Engineer at Rina Germany.

Frank Richter, Portfolio Manager at Tesvolt Ocean, added: “Rina has high standards and works for over 100 flag authorities worldwide. We are therefore all the more pleased that the Kaptein Compass Core has received approval for inland and maritime shipping. There is a great need for safe battery systems for clean ship propulsion, as more and more ports are refusing entry to ships without emission-free propulsion. Although there are numerous battery systems on the market, they are heavier and usually charge much more slowly.”
