Remontowa Shipbuilding has launched a new hybrid-powered passenger and car ferry under construction for Torghatten Nord AS.
As the shipyard announces, the launch went very smoothly and according to schedule. Currently, nearly 80 per cent of all work on the ship is completed, and the ferry will soon be prepared for harbour acceptance tests, which are scheduled to start in the second half of September.
The ferry has an overall length of 63.65 metres, a beam width of 15.50 metres, and can accommodate 149 people (passengers and crew) and 50 cars. The contract for the newbuild was signed in December 2023. The design was developed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company AS, with support in preparing workshop documentation from Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting, a member of the Remontowa Holding group.

The design places particular emphasis on utilising lightweight materials and implementing a wide range of low-loss solutions and systems, which will ultimately result in maximum energy consumption reduction.
The ferry has two azimuth thrusters with vertically mounted electric motors, powered by batteries or, in an emergency, by generators. In normal operation, the batteries are recharged from the shore power supply during the ferry’s unloading and loading.
As the shipyard states, they began to cooperate with Torghatten Nord AS in 2009. Between 2012 and 2013, the shipyard delivered four LNG-powered ferries – “Landegode”, “Væroy”, “Barøy” and “Lødingen” – which operate passenger and car transport services in the Lofoten archipelago.
This shipowner operates 43 ferry crossings and 15 routes with high-speed passenger boats.
The ship is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2026. She will serve the Stornes–Bjørnerå route in the Troms region, travelling between the ports in less than 12 minutes.
