Port Newark receives two new container cranes from Liebherr

Liebherr has delivered two ship-to-shore (STS) cranes for the Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT).

The project is part of the port’s expansion, for which a total of US$500m is being invested. Port Newark is one of the busiest hubs on the US East Coast.

The cranes have a radius of 69 metres and a lifting height of up to 53 metres, making them ideal for handling particularly large ships, according to a statement from Liebherr. Laser-based collision control and other features are designed to ensure smooth, safe and efficient operation.

Liebherr continues partnership with Port Newark

“We have been supplying cranes to the US for many years and this ongoing partnership with PNCT demonstrates the confidence our customers have in our engineering expertise,” said Declan O’Sullivan, General Manager Sales at Liebherr Container Cranes in Killarney, Ireland, where the cranes were manufactured. They have been able to deliver bespoke solutions for the terminal at a time when safety is paramount.

Liebherr and Port Newark will continue to expand their partnership in the future, the companies announced. “These new cranes will not only increase our capacity, but also position us to meet the increasing demands of global trade,” said PNCT President James Pellicio. “Our strategy is to create a modern, efficient terminal, and these cranes are integral to our goal of becoming one of the most modern ports on the East Coast.”

“Liebherr’s commitment to the US market remains strong,” said Winston Ziegler, Head of Sales for Maritime Cranes at Liebherr USA. “A local team of 35 dedicated professionals ensures world-class support for every crane we deliver. The successful delivery of these cranes to PNCT underscores our role as a key player in supporting America’s ports.”
