The Polish naval shipyard PGZ Stocznia Wojenna is currently undergoing a modernisation programme worth around PLN 300 million (approx. €70 million). The shipyard is being upgraded with new halls, quaysides, and the corresponding infrastructure.
The refurbishment works began in 2022 and, according to the general contractor, are progressing on schedule. Around 45% of the work has reportedly been completed. Completion of the modernisation is expected in the coming autumn.
The works are closely linked to the implementation of the “Miecznik” programme, which involves the construction of three multi-role frigates for the Polish Navy. A central aim of the investment is the construction of a new shipbuilding hall where the hulls of the three frigates will be assembled. The project is seen as a key component of the “Miecznik” programme and is expected to significantly increase the production capacity of PGZ Stocznia Wojenna.
The new hull construction hall is the tallest of its kind in the Polish shipbuilding industry and one of the largest such facilities in Europe. The consortium commissioned with the work – the NDI Group – is also responsible for expanding and redeveloping the quay, storage areas, and internal roads, as well as upgrading the technical infrastructure across the shipyard site.
Three-shift operation on site
According to the NDI Group, around half of the work has already been completed. Upcoming tasks include the construction of a new warehouse. In addition, a shelter for technical gases is being built on the shipyard premises, which will improve storage conditions for specialised materials. Another important element of the project is the conversion of part of building A-36 into a modern gatehouse with a covered entrance. Renovation of an existing building and expansion of the CCTV surveillance system are also planned.
“We are currently carrying out a project for the client that involves a complete overhaul of both the above-ground and underground infrastructure. As part of the same undertaking, we are also modernising existing halls used for shipbuilding,” explains Przemysław Młynarczyk, Site Manager at the NDI Group.
“The biggest challenge is the tight timeframe. However, we are doing everything we can to meet the deadline – including working in a three-shift system. Typical construction-related challenges include the ageing underground utilities, and the fact that we are operating within an active production facility. We therefore organise the work in such a way that operations can continue smoothly. The completion date for our works is scheduled for this autumn. Progress currently stands at around 45%, and we are fully on schedule,” he adds.
Strategic investment for national defence
In addition to the construction work, the project includes a comprehensive upgrade of the shipyard’s road and infrastructure network. This includes new storage areas and internal access roads. The total redeveloped area will cover approximately 31,000 square metres.
“We have been working as general contractor at the PGZ Shipyard site in Gdynia for over two years now. We are proud to be delivering another project of such strategic importance for our country’s defence capability,” says Przemysław Młynarczyk.
All newly constructed buildings will be equipped with state-of-the-art sanitary, electrical, and ICT systems to ensure maximum functionality. The total planned duration of the investment is twelve months. The modernisation is expected to significantly improve transport and logistics operations across the shipyard. The investor behind the project is PGZ Stocznia Wojenna in Gdynia.
