At SMM, Piening Propeller is demonstrating its PCP (Piening Controllable Propeller) with Water Hydraulics. Originating from maintenance and service work on propeller hubs, Piening Propeller has developed a cost-saving solution combined with green shipping benefits. The use of biodegradable oil in Controllable Pitch Propellers can negatively affect metals, leading to rapid wear between components and often resulting in extensive welding and machining work on hub and blade carriers. Piening has addressed this issue for different customers and brands of CPPs.
The Piening Controllable Propeller (PCP) design includes the use of composite components in all highly stressed bearings. This eliminates the need for reconditioning hubs and blade carriers, as only components need to be replaced. Additionally, service work no longer requires the complete removal of the hub. Furthermore, it is possible to use just water as a hydraulic medium instead of oil, reducing the risk of environmental pollution. This offers significant benefits to customers, combining environmental responsibility with cost savings.
For operational efficiency and minimal maintenance, the PCP’s blades are designed for simplified assembly and disassembly. Made from identical components for both left- and right-turning propellers, this reduces the number of different parts that users must handle and remember.
PCP diameters range from 1.1m to 5.4m and power spans from 300 to 10,000kW, depending on application and customer requirements.
