The shipping company Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), which belongs to the Chinese state-owned group Cosco, today celebrated the christening of the twelfth 24,188 TEU container ship newbuilding “OOCL Portugal”.
The ceremony took place at the Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering (Nacks) shipyard, north of Shanghai, at the mouth of the Yangtze River. The new ship, named “OOCL Portugal”, is the last ship in a series of 24,188 TEU Megamax freighters, which will also call at German ports, among others.
The naming ceremony was attended by Laura Liang Aron, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Shanghai, and Ni Zhao, Regional Director of the Hong Kong Ship Registry in Shanghai, as well as numerous other high-ranking guests, customers and business partners.
“The christening of our latest 24,188 TEU newbuilding marks an important milestone in the development of OOCL,” emphasised Michael Xu, Director and Member of the Executive Committee of OOCL, at the ceremony. “The delivery of this series provides us with the advantages of energy efficiency and economies of scale, which will enable us to provide better and more environmentally friendly services to improve our competitiveness in the face of future challenges.”
