ONE christens its sixth new building

The Ocean Network Express (ONE) fleet continues to grow: the next newbuild, “ONE Singapore”, was christened in Japan.

The ship, which is equipped to run on methanol and ammonia, is the sixth in a series of 20.

The naming ceremony took place at the Hiroshima shipyard of Imabari Shipbuilding in Japan. For ONE, the delivery is a further milestone in the expansion of the fleet and a step towards sustainable shipping, according to the shipping company. The “ONE Singapore” has a capacity of 13,900 TEU. She has been classed by Lloyd’s Register and sails under the Singapore flag.

“Today’s christening of the ‘ONE Singapore’ marks another step forward in our fleet expansion strategy,” said CEO Jeremy Nixon. “This vessel, which bears the name of our headquarters, symbolizes our strong connection to Singapore’s vibrant maritime ecosystem. With the commissioning of this vessel, we are reaffirming ONE’s strong commitment to Singapore and its pre-eminent position as a leading international maritime hub.”

The first newbuilding in the series – the “ONE Sparkle ” – was christened in February. A long series of further ships, which will be built in Japan and South Korea, is scheduled to follow by the end of 2026. ONE is the No. 6 container shipping company in the global market after Hapag-Lloyd. The joint venture between the major Japanese shipping companies MOL, NYK and K Line is set to grow further in the future: the order book contains almost 50 ships with a total capacity of over 600,000 TEU.

ONE is also active in Europe, recently more so than before. The Japanese company significantly expanded its feeder network and almost tripled its market share.
