OMS Group orders cable laying duo from Ulstein

The OMS Group has commissioned Ulstein to design and build two new cable ships. The two vessels are scheduled to enter service in 2028 and are specially designed for use in the installation of modern high-performance submarine cable systems.

In addition to high performance, the focus is on the lowest possible emissions and improved energy efficiency.

The new buildings are based on the “Ulstein SX252” design, developed by Ulstein Design & Solutions AS. The new buildings are being constructed at Ulstein Verft in Norway. With a length of 130 m and a width of 22 m, the units have a cable capacity of up to 6,500 tons. The accommodation is designed for 75 people.

The equipment includes two large cable tanks, two additional reserve tanks and an enclosed hangar above the cable deck. There is an open working deck for ROVs and containers on the hangar roof. A 50 t frame with towing winch is installed for plowing and towing work.

Distinctive X-Bow bow as a design feature

A key design feature is Ulstein’s X-BOW bow , which reduces the ship’s movements in rough seas. This is intended to reduce stress on cables and equipment and increase safety and operational capability even in difficult weather conditions. The concept is complemented by the energy-efficient Power Variable Speed Generator (VSG) system, which is designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

With these two newbuildings, the OMS Group is responding to the increasing global demand for submarine cable capacities. “With the increasing demand for global connectivity, available fleet capacity has become a critical bottleneck for the industry. These vessels significantly enhance our ability to deliver complex submarine cable installations reliably and at scale, and strongly position OMS Group for the next phase of global digital infrastructure growth,” emphasizes Ronnie Lim, Group Chief Executive Officer of OMS Group,

The OMS Group currently operates five of its own active cable ships. Four more units are already under construction.
