The world’s largest bulker shipping company, Oldendorff Carriers, is establishing a research centre for sustainable shipping together with the University of Strathclyde.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has now been signed by both parties. “Together we will work on sustainable shipping issues to support international and regional efforts to decarbonise the industry, promote a just transition and further improve safety in shipping operations,” said Torsten Barenthin, Director Research & Development Global Engagement & Sustainability at Oldendorff Carriers.
Oldendorff to conduct research in Glasgow in future
There are plans to establish the Oldendorff research centre in Glasgow, Scotland, where the University of UoS is based. The areas of joint research include the design of highly efficient ships, innovative technologies, intelligent and energy-efficient operating processes and alternative energy sources.
From the shipping company’s perspective, efforts to decarbonise shipping are faltering. “Frustrated by the slow pace of development, Oldendorff feels compelled to invest in academic research,” says Barenthin.
Executive Dean of the University of Strathclyde, Professor Stephen McArthur, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Oldendorff Carriers as the combination of Strathclyde’s research excellence and Oldendorff’s practical experience will undoubtedly provide exciting opportunities for the decarbonisation of shipping.”
