A collision occurred between the German tanker “Capella” and the Dutch offshore supply vessel “Coastal Legend” in Cuxhaven’s outer harbor, resulting in a significant fuel and oil spill.
Emergency services from the Cuxhaven water police, the Cuxhaven fire department and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief are on site.
The “Capella” measures 69 meters in length and 10 meters in width, while the “Coastal Legend” is 44 meters long and 9 meters wide.
According to the latest updates, the clean-up operation is still in progress. An oil barrier has been deployed around the supply ship; the spilled oil is being removed from the surface of the water using skimmers and pumped into the bunker vessel “Herta” via a collection basin provided by the Federal Agency for Technical Relief.
According to the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies, which took charge of the operation in the morning, reported that around 70m3 of oil-water mixture has been collected so far. The remaining fuel on board the “Coastal Legend” has been safely pumped out. Divers are working to seal the ship’s leak in the vessel’s hull.
In addition to the Federal Agency for Technical Relief, other representatives of the authorities and the oil recovery vessel “Knechtsand” are on site. The crew members of the “Capella” and “Coastal Legend” are being cared for by the German Seamen’s Mission and Stella Maris. There were no injuries reported in the collision.
