NVL offers VR training for frigate crews

The German Navy will rely on a virtual reality (VR) training simulation for the boat launching system of the Frigate 125 in future.

The contract concluded with ARGE F125, consisting of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and NVL, provides for the delivery of a VR simulator for the operation and training of a boat launching device by the end of 2026. The future use offers numerous advantages for the German Navy, it says.

The virtual reality training environment developed by the NVL enables a practical simulation of real scenarios without the need for extensive resources or logistical preparations. Among other things, the integration of the crane system’s original control panel into the VR environment will ensure practical training.

Another advantage of the VR simulator is the ability to safely practice risky scenarios for the training participants. Errors can also be corrected quickly in virtual reality. This would significantly reduce real damage or signs of wear and tear on real equipment. Trainers could also monitor all of the participants’ progress and intervene in a targeted manner to optimise training and adapt scenarios as required.

Virtual reality-supported training simulations developed by the NVL are already being used successfully by the Royal Australian Navy. Depending on customer requirements, VR simulators can be set up individually for all on-board systems. The NVL offers its customers the opportunity to use digital training environments for the operation and maintenance of all ship systems.
