Large MPP freighters with more than 60,000 dwt are currently enjoying considerable popularity. Newbuildings in this segment have once again been ordered in China.
Most recently it was the Chinese state-owned Cosco Group and the Chinese-Polish joint venture Chipolbrok, and now the listed shipping company Fujian Highton is following suit: The company announced in a stock exchange listing that three 62,000-dwt-vessels have been ordered.
The aim is to “further expand transport capacity, optimize the ship fleet, increase the company’s competitiveness and market share and improve profitability”, according to the decision. The project is worth the equivalent of around $130 million and will be invested via the wholly-owned subsidiary Haitong International Shipping. The freighters will be built by Taizhou Kouan Shipbuilding.
