The hull of the new DP3 cable carrier “Nexans Electra” has now arrived at Ulstein Verft in Norway. This marks the start of the outfitting and completion phase of the 155.20 m long special vessel, which is scheduled for delivery in 2026. The construction contract for the unit was signed in September 2023.

The newbuild developed by Skipsteknisk is designed for laying large HVDC and HVAC cable systems as well as for complex underwater work. On deck, the “Nexans Electra” will have a split rotating carousel with a capacity of up to 10,000 tons of cable, with a further 3,500 tons planned below deck. A fiberglass tank with a capacity of 450 t is also planned. There will be space for up to 90 people on board after delivery.
The special vessel is being built on behalf of the French group Nexans, a leading supplier of submarine cable systems, which signed the construction contract with Ulstein Verft in 2023. The hull was manufactured at the Crist shipyard in Poland and has now been transferred to Ulstein in northwestern Norway. There, outfitting work, electrical installation, insulation and the installation of the main aggregates, deck machinery, winches and superstructures will follow.
The “Nexans Electra” is based on the “Nexans Aurora” delivered in 2021 and will feature an energy storage system, shore power connections and biofuel capability. The newbuild is designed to ensure high maneuverability and precise positioning, particularly in difficult weather conditions.
