New e-ferries for Molslinjen are delayed

The Danish ferry operator Molslinjen has had to rearrange its summer timetable as the two new electric ferries “Nerthus” and “Tryfing” will be delivered late by the Turkish Cemre shipyard.

As a result, the shipping company is now swapping several ferries in order to standardize the ferry service to the Baltic Sea island of Samsø. In return, the tickets in the recently published timetable will be cheaper for the rest of 2025.

Due to the delayed delivery, the reasons for which are not given by the shipping company, Molslinjen is swapping the two electric ferries for the Alslinjen and Samsølinjen ferry routes. This means that Alslinjen will have to wait for its electric ferry, while Samsølinjen will receive the electric ferry planned for Alslinjen.

Molslinjen prioritizes electric ferry to Samsø

Denmark’s first electric ferry, the “Nerthus”, which was built for Alslinjen, is expected to go into service on June 16, 2025 – but now for Samsølinjen. Until then, the replacement ferry “Fynshav” will operate, making up to four double trips a day on the busiest days.

“Samsø is a destination where the number of passengers increases significantly in the summer. We therefore need to be able to operate a ferry with more capacity. That is why we have decided to send the ferry from Alslinjen to Samsø after delivery,” says Kristian Durhuus, CEO of Molslinjen.

The “Nerthus” with construction number 1098 was originally ordered for delivery in late summer 2024, while the “Tyrfing” with construction number 1099 was scheduled for early 2025. The two 116.8 m long and 18.2 m wide ships were designed by OSK Ship Tech AS and built in accordance with Bureau Veritas regulations. They can accommodate up to 600 people and 188 cars. It is not yet known when the “Tryfing” will be delivered by the Cemre shipyard.

The almost 4,000 inhabitants and travelers to Samsø are no strangers to dynamic prices, as there are already different prices depending on the season, but now there is to be a real low-cost ticket: For a normal car, prices will start at DKK 99 (approx. €13.30) for a crossing all year round – and in the absolute peak season on a summer Saturday, the most expensive ticket will cost a maximum of DKK 392 (€52.50) for a normal car.

“We hope that this will help to make Samsø a popular destination even outside the high season,” says Durhuus. The timetable for the Samsø line has now been updated for the rest of the year.

The 12.06 km² island of Samsø lies between the east coast of Jutland, the Zealand peninsula of Røsnæs and Funen. Thanks to its particularly mild climate, Samsø is also known today as the “vegetable garden of the Baltic”. Among energy experts, the island has long been known beyond all borders, as the energy transition has already been mastered here. In 1997, Samsø won a government competition as a model renewable energy community. Today, 100% of the island’s electricity comes from wind power and biomass. (CE)
