The “Fehmarn”, a new LNG-powered ship, has been put into service by the main customs office in Kiel. It replaces the “Priwall” and was built at the Peene shipyard in Wolgast. The ship bears the “Blue Angel” eco-label
The customs boat “Priwall” has been in service since 1991. Now it has found a successor in the new “Fehmarn”.
The “Fehmarn” was built at the Peene shipyard in Wolgast on behalf of the main customs office in Kiel. Last week, the new one-watch ship was ceremoniously christened and put into service.
With a length of over 55 m, the “Fehmarn” will in future be used primarily to monitor the cross-border movement of goods and to enforce customs regulations in the Bay of Lübeck and Mecklenburg up to the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The ship is equipped with an innovative, low-emission LNG propulsion system. Compared to conventional diesel drives, sulphur dioxides are completely avoided, nitrogen oxides are significantly reduced and particulate matter emissions are cut by 95 percent. In addition, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by up to 20 percent, which significantly reduces the environmental impact.
As the new customs ship has innovative technology on board, it has been awarded the “Blue Angel” eco-label. The LNG customs vessels “Rügen” and “Emden”, which have already entered service this year, also bear this eco-label.
In addition to the modern propulsion technology, the new customs vessel is equipped with the latest control and monitoring technology, the customs office reports. The daughter boat on board, a rigid-hull inflatable boat named “Orth”, increases flexibility during inspection trips and boarding maneuvers.
