The “Mercedes Pinto” is the third dual-fuel ro-pax fast ferry to be launched for the Spanish shipping company Baleària. Sea trials for the 123-metre-long newbuild are scheduled to begin in early 2026.
The Spanish shipping company Baleària has launched its third dual-fuel ro-pax fast ferry, the “Mercedes Pinto”. The new 123-metre-long vessel was built by the Spanish shipyard Astilleros Armon Gijón and developed based on a design by Incat Crowther. The interior work is now continuing before sea trials are scheduled to begin in early 2026.
The “Mercedes Pinto” follows its sister ships “Eleanor Roosevelt” (2021) and “Margarita Salas” (2024), which are already being successfully deployed on routes between the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands.
The ferry is powered by dual-fuel engines with LNG operation. The ship is also prepared for the use of 100% biomethane and hydrogen blends of up to 25%. Efficiency systems, smart sensor technology, emissions monitoring and modern navigation systems will further improve the environmental balance and operation.
The ship offers space for 1,200 passengers and 425 vehicles. Compared to the first unit, the “Mercedes Pinto” offers additional comfort and space, including an additional passenger deck with lounge area in the bow and an enlarged aft terrace with outdoor bar.
The new Baleària is named after the Spanish writer and human rights activist Mercedes Pinto. (1883 – 1976) It is scheduled to be commissioned next year.
Baleària President Adolfo Utor spoke of an “important milestone” for the fleet, while Incat Crowther Manager Dan Mace emphasized the successful cooperation with Baleària and Armon.
