New alliance for efficient propulsion system maintenance

Offering repair and maintenance services from a single source – this is the objective of the newly announced partnership between Loewe Marine, Movena Korea and Subsea Global Solutions (SGS).

The cooperation agreement between Bremen-based Loewe Marine, Busan-based Movena Korea and SGS from Miami focuses on collaboration in the repair and maintenance of manoeuvring and propulsion systems.

Threefold expertise

Loewe Marine is a globally established manufacturer of rudders for all types and sizes of vessels and a provider of maintenance and repair services for rudders and steering gear systems. The Movena Group brings more than 20 years of experience with Asian, particularly Korean, shipyards, shipping companies and classification societies in the fields of design, plan approval, ship inspection and repair, and certification of materials and components. As the third partner, SGS contributes teams stationed on all continents specialising in underwater welding operations. Together with Movena, these teams have already successfully completed around a dozen projects in recent years without the need for drydocking.

Integrated propulsion and manoeuvring technology solutions

This optimised cooperation offers maritime industry customers specialised, professional services for highly efficient propulsion and manoeuvring technology from a single source. According to the partners, shipowners and operators will benefit from this partnership immediately, as newly created synergies will help to significantly reduce vessel operating costs, particularly in the areas of maintenance and repair.

The companies aim to support shipowners and operators with tailored solutions. The goal is always to increase efficiency, with measures chosen to suit the specific requirements of each client. These services range from modifications and upgrades in the fields of propeller retrofits and high-efficiency flap rudders through to state-of-the-art hull designs.

The joint service portfolio includes optimised ship and propulsion design that, through a holistic and highly efficient approach, already meets future EEDI-3 and CII limits. Support for both in-house and external modification projects to improve existing propulsion and rudder performance is also part of the partners’ offering. Furthermore, damage analysis for propulsion systems, including action plans for temporary or permanent repairs, as well as underwater works, is available. A key component of the service is project management during retrofit or repair phases in drydock, ensuring effective interface management for propeller systems, rudders and steering gear to deliver the highest quality from a single source and guarantee smooth and timely implementation.

Holistic service approach

By providing comprehensive services across the four key areas of hull, propeller, rudder and steering gear, the partners aim to minimise potential interface issues. Reducing these risks for ship operators is expected to lead to more efficient processes, shorter project durations and improved techno-economic outcomes.

“Our long-standing partnership with Loewe Marine and SGS enables us to offer shipowners and operators an even more comprehensive service,” says You-Seong Kim, Managing Director of Movena Korea. Carsten Löhmer, Managing Partner of Loewe Marine, adds: “With this new offering, we can respond more precisely to the individual needs of our customers worldwide, optimally adapting their propulsion systems to specific requirements and providing targeted support both in drydock and in water.”

Kevin Peters, Director Technical Sales at SGS, emphasises the importance of this competence-based partnership for ship operators and insurers in repair cases: “Our services provide an effective alternative to costly and time-consuming drydockings or long-distance towage, allowing us to significantly reduce costs.”
