The Neptun shipyard in Rostock has handed over the river cruise ship “Viking Honir” to Viking Cruises. Following the technical handover in Arnhem, the official delivery took place yesterday in Basel.
The Neptun shipyard in Rostock has delivered another river cruise ship from the Longship series. The newbuilding, named “Viking Honir”, went to the shipyard’s long-standing client Viking Cruises.
The technical handover of the 135 m long and 11.45 m wide “Viking Honir” took place on October 9 in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The official handover to the shipping company took place yesterday in Basel.
The technical handover to the shipping company took place in the presence of CEO Stephan Schmees and project manager Andre Rose.
“After a successful test run on September 23, we are proud to have handed over this project to our customer,” explained Project Manager Andre Rose.
“With the successful handover, we have reached an important milestone together. I am very happy and proud that we have gone this way together as a team and achieved our goal through our collaboration,” added CEO Stephan Schmees.
Longships sail hybrid
Like all river cruise ships built by Neptun for Viking, the new series of ships is also equipped with a hybrid system. This consists of a diesel-electric drive and a battery system. This allows peak loads to be balanced out and fuel consumption to be reduced. The speed that the ships in the Longship series can reach with this system is 21 km/h.
According to Wert, the ships also feature a number of technical innovations, such as a compact waste water treatment system.
Long-standing partnership
Neptun Werft has been building river cruise ships in the Longship series for Viking River Cruises since 2011. To date, over 60 of these identical Longships have been delivered.
The ships offer space for up to 190 passengers in 95 cabins. The special feature is the wide range of different cabins. Passengers can choose between five different types: standard cabins, cabins with a French balcony and two Explorer Suites. The Viking longship fleet sails on the Rhine, Elbe, Main, Danube and other rivers in a total of twelve countries.
