Mibau Stema plans to deploy new self-unloaders

Mibau Stema intends to use its newly ordered self-unloading vessels for building materials transport from autumn 2028. The partners involved have a long-standing relationship, with the most recent order placed in 2018 for a new vessel.

The company’s history dates back to Elbe-Weser-Handelskontor, founded 40 years ago by entrepreneur Hans-Jürgen Hartmann from Cadenberge. Since then, Mibau Stema has undergone several consolidations and acquisitions – including Rostock’s cement handling company – as well as investments in firms in Papenburg and Emden. Since 2016, 60% of the company has been owned by HeidelbergCement Group.

According to the company, the newbuilds are “an important part of the Group’s long-term growth strategy, ensuring increased transport capacity, improved operational flexibility and another step towards sustainable shipping.” Based on the design of “Starnes” and “Fjordnes”, delivered in 2020 and 2021, the new vessels will feature “significant design improvements.” Construction will be carried out in cooperation with the Hartmann family, co-owners of Mibau Stema, and Canada Steamship Lines (CSL). The order was placed with Chengxi Shipyard in China.

CEO Claus Boisen said: “Our investment in these two new vessels is a clear commitment to our customers, our partners and our environmental goals. By increasing capacity, improving operational flexibility and introducing the latest fuel technology, we are securing our long-term growth and ensuring that Mibau Stema remains the leading and most sustainable choice for the transportation of aggregates.”

According to the Group, Mibau Stema transports around 17 million tons of building materials annually for major infrastructure projects, sourced from its three quarries. Seven vessels currently serve the company’s 40 terminals along the North Sea and Baltic coasts, among other locations.

Details of the new ships

  • Increased loading capacity: +3,500 tons compared to “Starnes”/”Fjordnes”, enabling each vessel to transport around 2.5 million tons per year
  • Increased beam: From 29 m to 32 m, allowing greater flexibility in cargo planning per hold
  • Improved unloading system: Modified boom system capable of unloading 5,500 tons per hour independently
  • Dual-fuel propulsion: Engines capable of running on B100 biofuel from the outset, with the option to switch to green methanol once it becomes available
  • Optimised hull design: For improved fuel efficiency
