Meyer Floating Solutions plans to build floating hotel for Cardiff

Meyer Werft wants to expand its own portfolio with floating real estate and infrastructure projects. Another project for Welsh waters has now been initiated.

The subsidiary Meyer Floating Solutions, which was launched in 2022, has presented plans for a floating hotel in Cardiff Bay with the company Morfield Floating Hotels.

The project, scheduled for delivery in 2027, is a floating hotel “designed to enhance the city’s waterfront in Wales and improve the visitor experience”.

The project timetable envisages the completion of planning approvals and consultation with the local authority this year. Construction is due to begin next year, before “delivery, installation and opening of the floating hotel in Cardiff Bay” in 2027.

Developed in collaboration with Spicer Architects, the 120-room floating hotel, which is not self-propelled, will be entirely manufactured and commissioned on site, according to a statement. Once delivered to its berth in Roath Basin, it will be installed “efficiently and with minimal disruption to the surrounding community” as no conventional construction site is required.

Offsite construction with Meyer Floating Solutions

Planning and consultation phases are currently underway in close collaboration with Cardiff City Council, Associated British Ports and local stakeholders. Public consultation will help to refine the final design and ensure it is in line with the long-term development objectives for Cardiff’s waterfront.

“Meyer Floating Solutions’ advanced modular offsite construction method allows for shorter delivery times, streamlined permitting processes and significantly reduced on-site labor – a modern alternative to traditional port construction,” the partners write.

“Our vision is to create a landmark that enhances Cardiff’s waterfront while demonstrating what is possible with modern floating architecture,” says Kaj Casén, CEO of Meyer Floating Solutions. For the subsidiary of the Papenburg shipbuilder, this is another new project within just a few weeks. At the beginning of March, an order was announced for a surf platform to be installed in Hamburg.
