Messina shipping company expands range with Marlow ships

The Italian MSC subsidiary Messina is expanding its fleet with the recently acquired container ship from Marlow Navigation.

It is the former “Lana”, which is now sailing for Ignazio Messina & C. under its new name of “Jolly Giada”. The container ship has a capacity of 4,387 TEU and joins the three ships already in service. The takeover took place in Algeciras, Spain, the shipping company announced. [ds_preview]

It is a sister ship to the “Jolly Rosa”, which was taken over in Singapore shortly before Christmas. The classic Panamax was built by Daewoo in 2010, is 260 m long and 32 m wide and can transport 360 reefer containers, the statement added. It was previously chartered to Maersk and sails under the Italian flag. The “Jolly Giada” will initially operate on routes from/to the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and East and South Africa.

Messina relies on Panamax container ships

In addition to the sister ship “Jolly Rosa”, also acquired from Marlow, the Group has already been operating the units “Jolly Oro” and “Jolly Argento” since the end of 2023. These are the two 4,400 TEU vessels “Northern Promotion” (built in 2010) and “Northern Priority” (built in 2009) from the former fleet of the North German shipping company H. Schuldt, which were each purchased for USD 28 million.

Messina actually specialized in ConRo transports. Following the entry of MSC, the fleet was converted to full container ships. The family-run company has gradually sold a total of eight ConRo freighters in recent months. Messina intends to specialize in traffic between Asia and Africa.
