MAN secures orders for Portuguese navy

MAN Energy Solutions has received two orders from the Portuguese Navy. The company is equipping several newbuildings with MAN 175D engines.

The Dutch shipyard Damen Shipyards Group has ordered several 175D engines from MAN Energy Solutions for the construction of a multi-purpose vessel (MPV). The order comprises two 12V175D MEM engines (each with 1,800 kW at 1,800 rpm) and two 16V175D MEM engines (each with 2,400 kW at 1,800 rpm).

Delivery of the engines is scheduled for 2025. The ship is scheduled for completion in 2026. Thanks to its multi-purpose platform, the 107 m long MPV can primarily be used for the following purposes: Ocean research, sea rescue and emergency response, as well as maritime security and supply operations.

“The Portuguese Navy can not only carry out demanding missions with this versatile vessel, but also conduct deep-sea research,” said Florian Keiler, Head of High-Speed Sales, Marine Four-Stroke, MAN Energy Solutions. “A particular requirement for this order was structure-borne noise. Therefore, the 175D GenSets will be equipped with double-sprung suspensions to meet all noise requirements over the entire frequency range.”

MAN engines for six offshore patrol boats

For the other key project, the Portuguese shipyard West Sea – Estaleiros Navais has ordered several MAN 175D engines for the construction of six offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) with a length of 83 meters. The order comprises six units, each with two 16V175D-MEL engines with an output of 2,960 kW at 1,800 rpm.

The Viana do Castelo class OPVs will be built at West Sea’s shipyard in the north of Portugal. The engines will be built at MAN Energy Solutions’ Danish plant in Frederikshavn and are scheduled for delivery between early 2026 and mid-2029, with the respective ship deliveries taking place 18 months later.

The main tasks of the OPVs include long-range maritime surveillance and patrols as well as search and rescue operations. Depending on the sensors and weapons installed on board, they can also be used for military operations in maritime trouble spots.

“This is an excellent reference project for the MAN 175D as ships have high requirements in terms of maneuverability, speed, maintenance cycles and environmental standards,” said Dietmar Zutt, Sales Manager, High-Speed Navy – MAN Energy Solutions. “West Sea and the Portuguese Navy deliberately chose this engine because the required ship power of around 6 MW can be achieved with just two compact 16V175D-MEL GenSets.”

In his opinion, they also offer the best power-to-length ratio in this segment and can easily meet the performance requirements despite having 8 fewer cylinders than our competitors’ engines. “Our GenSets therefore take up less space in the engine room and don’t need to be serviced as often.”

Advantages of the MAN 175D units:

  • Excellent engine dynamics enable the best maneuverability and fastest acceleration in the segment
  • Best OPEX value in the market segment enables higher range
  • Resilience at high temperatures: The engine can always be operated at full power. This eliminates any throttling that could endanger the ship.
  • Remarkable endurance at low load: 24 hours in low load operation without increasing engine power is possible without any problems
  • Control system ensures comprehensive cyber security
  • CO2-neutral operation with FAME fuels (100%) possible
  • Methanol operation possible
