With the delivery of the first of three CF 3850 combi freighters from Damen, shipping company M. Lauterjung has ordered a fourth newbuilding.
The freighter was built at Ba Son Shipyard in Vietnam. After completing its maiden voyage to Europe, the “Arion” will enter into a charter contract with shortsea shipping company Amadeus Schiffahrt, a subsidiary of Duisburg-based shipping company HGK Shipping. She will then sail there as the “Amadeus Pearl”.
The “Arion” CF 3850 is not only the first ship from Damen to be delivered to the shipping company M. Lauterjung, but also the first ship that Damen has delivered as part of its cooperation with Ba Son Shipyard. Damen has created additional capacity at the Vietnamese shipyard to meet the growing demand.
Fourth newbuild for Lauterjung comes from China
Damen is currently building a further seven CF units at the Vietnamese shipyard, including two more for the shipping company M. Lauterjung. Following delivery, Damen and Lauterjung signed a contract for a fourth CF 3850 vessel, which will be built at Damen’s Yichang Shipyard in China. This latest order will provide a 30% increase in fuel efficiency.
Damen will design the vessel to run on biofuels and have batteries for peak loads and port operations. It will also be hybrid-capable and prepared for a future switch to all-electric operation with minimal downtime.
“We are very pleased with the ship’s performance on its maiden voyage,” said Kay Lauterjung, Managing Director of the Emden-based shipping company. “Damen has delivered the first ship we ordered on time and in high quality.” The company had earlier newbuildings built by Veka in the Netherlands.
The Damen Shipyards Group operates 35 shipyards and delivers around 100 ships a year with a total production value of over €3bn.
