At the Peene Shipyard in Wolgast, which is part of Lürssen, the keel has been laid for the first of three new fleet service boats for the German Navy.
Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack, Inspector of the Navy, and Vice Admiral Thomas Daum, Inspector of the Cyber and Information Domain, emphasized the strategic importance of these future units for Germany’s maritime security architecture.
The public contracting authority awarded the construction contract for the new fleet service boats to NVL, the naval division of Lürssen, in 2023. These vessels are intended to serve as highly effective strategic reconnaissance assets for the armed forces.
Designed to meet high future-proof intelligence requirements worldwide, they are capable of operating for up to a year, supporting helicopter missions, and carrying drones on board. “For the German Navy, the new fleet service boats will be an extremely valuable enhancement of capabilities,” said Vice Admiral Kaack.
The approximately 130-meter-long Fleet Service Boats of the Class 424 are equipped with state-of-the-art sensor technology. The estimated cost for the project is around €3.3 billion.
