Premiere at the Lürssen site in Rendsburg: a superyacht with fuel cell propulsion was undocked there for the first time. It is the 114.2 m long new construction project “Cosmos”.
The shipyard is not revealing many details about the new yacht. What has been revealed is that the futuristic design was created by Marc Newson. The “Cosmos” was designed for long-distance voyages and expeditions to remote regions and is reinforced for ice class 1D so that it can sail all five oceans and all seven continents.
“This is a very special project that coincides with our 150th anniversary,” says Peter Lürssen. “While it is true that as a specialist shipyard, no two yachts that leave our halls are ever identical, there are some that leave an indelible mark on our history – the Cosmos is undoubtedly one of those yachts.”
The “Cosmos” is powered by electric motors that draw their electricity from fuel cells. According to media reports, the fuel cell technology comes from the German company Freudenberg. The Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa is said to have commissioned the yacht, which costs around €350 million.
