At Remontowa Shipbuilding on December 16, 2024, the keel for the construction of the sixth serial mine countermeasure vessel of project 258 “Kormoran II” was ceremoniously laid.
The ship will bear the name “ORP Czajka”. “Cooperation with the Navy has been part of our shipyard’s history almost since its inception. We have built nearly 600 modern naval and special ships. Some of them remain in service to date. This testifies to the high quality and reliability of the ships we build,” stated Dariusz Jaguszewski, CEO of Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A.
“Kormoran II” strengthens Poland’s Navy
Jacek Siewiera, Head of the National Security Bureau, emphasized the importance of leveraging Poland’s shipbuilding capabilities: “It is a great task for the State to use this production-optimized chain as an export offer of the Polish Republic. This offer strengthens our industry’s relations with foreign partners, including countries in the Baltic region and beyond the European Union, where interest in protecting critical infrastructure is growing amid today’s security challenges.”
Rear Admiral Piotr Sikora, Commander of the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla, highlighted the strategic significance of the vessel: “We are taking another extremely important step. The capabilities we are developing in bottom scanning and situational awareness are currently critical for our country. Most of the energy resources and goods are transported by sea, making maritime security indispensable.”
The keel laying ceremony concluded with the signing of a protocol and the welding of a symbolic coin into the keel – a traditional mark for good luck and the future ship’s successful service.
