The Belgian specialist shipping company Jan De Nul has ordered another newbuild. Most recently, it was a cable-laying vessel; now, a dredger has been ordered in India.
Jan de Nul has signed a contract with Goa Shipyard in India for the construction of a “next generation” trailing suction hopper dredger. The vessel is a plug-in hybrid designed specifically for use in small ports.
With a hull length of 79 meters, the new vessel will be the smallest in the Group’s hopper dredger fleet. It has a capacity of 2,000 m³. The contract covers one ship with a delivery period of 24 months for the first ship and an option to build a second sister ship.
Goa Shipyard wants to diversify its portfolio
Jan Van De Velde, Director Newbuilding at the Jan De Nul Group, said: “It’s a small hopper with big capabilities. As a DC hybrid plug-in, the vessel is highly innovative and has great potential to reduce our carbon footprint. Another added value for our versatile fleet.”
The new vessel has been specifically designed for use in small ports in densely populated areas, such as marinas. B. K. Upadhyay, CMD at GSL said, “So far we have exported ‘defence platforms’ to various countries and we have become the largest exporter of these products from India. This prestigious contract with a European customer is an important step towards diversifying into the global commercial shipbuilding market.”
