The port of Helsingborg handles around 275,000 TEU by sea every year and a further 25,000 TEU by rail. This makes it Sweden’s second largest container terminal.
Over the past year and a half, the port has significantly increased its productivity. Operational planning has been rationalized and bottlenecks reduced. The overall efficiency of terminal handling has also increased.
The introduction of the new Terminal Operating System (TOS) N 4 from Kaleris, a provider of supply chain solutions, is a major step towards becoming the most modern container terminal in the Nordic region. Existing areas will be optimized, investments will be made in innovative technology, capacity will be increased and sustainability will be improved.
“The static yard planning solution we were using previously was limiting our operational efficiency. It offered almost no possibility to easily change the yard layout. Over time, this lack of flexibility led to a reduction in yard capacity,” says Sanjin Redzepagic, Chief Information Officer at the Port of Helsingborg. “The port also lacked a complete picture of its operational data, which is essential for assessing efficiency and sustainability targets.”
Up to 30% more capacity
The switch to N4 has significantly improved the terminal’s operations. “With N4, we can dynamically change the yard layout and parameters to increase our capacity by up to 30% within the existing space,” Sanjin continues. “In addition, with the Berth Window Management Vessel Planning function, we can handle containers much more efficiently by digitizing our berth plan. This has enabled us to reduce the number of container handling operations during ship loading by 50%, which improves our efficiency and reduces fuel consumption,” says Sanjin.
The Port of Helsingborg also achieved an eight percent increase in gross movements per hour (GMPH), largely thanks to N4’s robust data analysis and reporting capabilities. The port team is taking advantage of the new level of detail in call data now available to them to analyze operational trends and use these data insights for continuous improvement.
Helsingborg aims to become Sweden‘s most efficient port
Given the scale of the operational changes, it was important for the Port of Helsingborg to have a reliable partner. “We have gained both a powerful new technology system and a partnership with Kaleris that will drive our future modernization developments,” says Sanjin. “By 2035, we will be Sweden’s most efficient port, with the most satisfied customers and employees in the industry.”
“During the implementation, we faced several challenges, all of which were overcome thanks to the exemplary teamwork and willingness of both teams to put in the necessary effort to ensure the success of the project,” said Molly Harrison, Chief Operating Officer at Kaleris. “The dedication, commitment and teamwork shown by both the Port of Helsingborg and Kaleris on this project has been truly inspiring. Together we have laid the foundations for the port’s continued success.”
