She was the first woman to head an armed branch of the US armed forces. Now Admiral Linda Fagan, commander of the US Coast Guard, has been dismissed.
The 61-year-old lost her post just two days after Donald Trump took office. His acting Secretary of Homeland Security, Benjamine Huffman, fired the commander of the US Coast Guard with the rank of admiral.
According to reports in the US media, Fagan is accused of leadership deficiencies and operational failures, including in securing the borders and procuring new ships and helicopters. She has also “overly” focused on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. In the end, according to a ministry spokesperson, there was no longer a basis of trust.
President Donald Trump had announced before and after his inauguration that he would stop all DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) programs in the US authorities. The Coast Guard has recently come under heavy criticism. It was about covered-up sexual assaults and racism.
Former President Joe Biden appointed Fagan as head of the Coast Guard in 2021. At the time, she became the first woman to head one of the six US armed forces.
