Vietnam’s Hateco Group and APM Terminals have celebrated the opening of the Haiphong terminal in Vietnam, which will also be served by the Gemini cooperation.
The new Hateco Haiphong International Container Terminal (HHIT) will offer two new deep-water berths at Lach Huyen Port in Haiphong City.
The new berths will be able to handle mega ships of up to 18,000 TEU. As an independent company of A.P. Moller-Maersk, APM Terminals is part of the integrated Maersk Sea, Terminal and Land Services.
“It is with great pride that we stand here today as strategic partners to facilitate and celebrate this major step forward for Vietnam’s shipping and logistics capabilities,” said Robert Mærsk Uggla, Chairman of Maersk, at the opening ceremony. As the modern and largest deep-water container port in North Vietnam, the new facility will enable businesses, create jobs and connect Vietnam to the world in a more efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly way, he added.
“Looking to the future, Maersk is eager to deepen cooperation with Vietnam and our strategic partner Hateco,” Mærsk Uggla added. “We are proud to provide our expertise and best practices to add value to our customers, partners and other stakeholders in Haiphong and beyond.”
Terminal is also a hub of the Gemini cooperation
As part of the project, APM Terminals has shared best practices in the areas of security, port automation, use of artificial intelligence, process optimization and decarbonization, all of which are joint priorities of the public-private partners. The terminal was also selected as part of the Gemini cooperation, the new East-West network of Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd.
“In just 30 months, a dream has become the most modern maritime gateway for North Vietnam,” said Tran Van Ky, Chairman of the Hateco Group, which specializes in infrastructure. “For Hateco, it is not just a new port. It is a gateway to progress, a symbol of partnership and proof of what vision, innovation and collaboration can achieve.”
However, Hateco and its professional and dedicated employees could not achieve this alone. “We appreciate the foresight and trust of the Vietnamese government in offering Hateco this strategic infrastructure project. We also feel privileged to work with the experts and consultants from Maersk and APM Terminals who share their insights from global operations with us to make the construction and operation of the HHIT project smarter, greener and faster,” Van Ky added.
Partners sign MoU
At the opening ceremony, Hateco and APM Terminals also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen and expand the strategic partnership in port and logistics investment and operations in Haiphong and potential new strategic locations in Vietnam.
Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh and Danish Ambassador to Vietnam and Laos Nicolai Prytz attended the launch event and praised the development of the HHIT deep-water port project and the successful partnership between Maersk and Hateco, which contributes significantly to the deepening of trade and cultural ties between Europe and Vietnam.
