The Hartmann shipping group, based in Leer in East Frisia, is reflagging a large part of its gas tanker fleet to Portugal.
A total of 18 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tankers, including one newbuilding, with a combined gross tonnage of 250,000, are to sail under the Portuguese flag in future.
The ships are among the most modern and youngest LPG units in the world. With this step, Hartmann intends to strengthen its cooperation with the International Register of Shipping of Madeira (MAR), which is managed in Portugal.
The move comes against the backdrop of recent changes in the German tax administration regarding the taxation of seafarers, which have prompted Hartmann to consolidate its gas tanker fleet under MAR. By choosing Portugal, the long-established Leer-based shipping company aims to strengthen continuity for its crews and secure its commitment to European quality and sustainability standards in shipping.
“We are grateful that Hartmann, with its outstanding tradition and innovative fleet, is further expanding its partnership with MAR,” explains Dr. Albrecht Gundermann, Managing Partner of Euromar. “MAR is continuously growing with market-leading and quality-oriented shipowners and vessels. In times of geopolitical uncertainty, the decision for an EU flag is more important than ever.” Euromar, which acts as a private broker on behalf of shipping companies, facilitates communication with all relevant authorities in Portugal and takes care of flag and ship registry matters.
With the reflagging by Hartmann, MAR is consolidating its position as a fast-growing European register that offers shipping companies stable and competitive framework conditions.
