Hapag-Lloyd appoints new Head of Middle East Region

As of January 1, Lars Sorensen will become Senior Managing Director of the Middle East region. He succeeds Dheeraj Bhatia, who moves up to the Executive Board of Hapag-Lloyd.

Sorensen joined Hapag-Lloyd five years ago and successfully headed the India area as Managing Director. There he demonstrated a high degree of commitment and leadership qualities that make him the ideal candidate for his new area of responsibility, Hapag-Lloyd announced. [ds_preview]

The Dane succeeds Dheeraj Bhatia, who has headed the Middle East region from Dubai as Senior Managing Director since 2018 and is also a new member of the Hapag-Lloyd Executive Board as of January 1, 2024. He will become CEO of the new Hapag-Lloyd Terminal Holding division, in which the Hamburg-based liner shipping company will bundle all of its terminal activities and shareholdings. The company will be based in Rotterdam.

Hapag-Lloyd’s terminal division for 20 locations worldwide

Around 2,600 employees are assigned to the Terminal & Infrastructure segment. They look after 20 terminals in Europe, Latin America, the USA, India and North Africa.

In recent years, Hapag-Lloyd has invested millions in terminal and logistics activities. These include investments in the container terminals in Wilhelmshaven, Tangier (Morocco), Damietta (Egypt) and most recently J M Baxi (India). In addition, there is the investment in Spinelli (Italy) and a stake in the terminal business of Chilean company SM SAAM. “Once the portfolio has reached a certain size, it may make sense to spin off these activities,” explained shipping company CEO Rolf Habben Jansen at the beginning of this year.
