General cargo freighter sinks due to Typhoon Gaemi

The general cargo ship “Fu Shun” has sunk off the coast of Taiwan due to Typhoon Gaemi. Local authorities have begun searching for the crew.

The “Fu Shun”, built in 1985 and 56 meters long, sailed under the flag of Tanzania. It was about 19 nm off the coast of Taiwan in the early morning. The island in the China Sea had been hit by Typhoon Gaemi during the night.

Local authorities announced that the nine-man crew from Myanmar were able to leave the ship wearing life jackets. The search operation will continue as soon as weather conditions allow.

Hundreds killed by Typhoon Gaemi

According to the latest reports, three people in Taiwan have died as a result of the typhoon and over 200 have been injured. The storm also caused the sinking of the oil tanker “Terra Nova”, which was carrying 1.4 million litres. The accident could become the largest oil spill in the Philippines.

The Taiwan Coast Guard announced that three more ships had run aground. However, no injuries were reported and no dangerous goods were spilled.
