After a long standstill, work has resumed at FSG Shipyard with the “firing start 2.0” for the RoRo ferry of the Australian shipping company Searoad.
The 210 m vessel is scheduled for delivery to the client in 2026. FSG CEO Thorsten Rönner and Tony Johnson, Technical Marine Manager at Searoad, accompanied the firing of the ferry’s weather deck (module C57, section 43), which is 23 m above the keel.
“This firing launch is more than just a start for Project 784, it is also the signal for the re-launch of the new FSG,” the company said. “The resumption of the project is a significant moment for the shipyard and shows that Flensburg still has a future in the shipbuilding industry.”
FSG went to Rönner, Nobiskrug to Lürssen
The commissioned RoRo ferry with a length of 210m and a width of 29.30m is due to be delivered to Searoad in the third quarter of 2026. It will be equipped with an LNG propulsion system. The ship will have 3,722 track meters available for freight transport, and 101 cars can also be taken on board (this corresponds to a total of 4,227 track meters).
As a special requirement, the newbuild will also be suitable for transporting heavy cargo with a unit weight of up to 100 tons. The order has a total value of more than €100 million. The new RoRo ferry will operate on the Bass Strait between Devonport in Tasmania and Melbourne in the state of Victoria on the Australian mainland. The ship was originally ordered in 2021 and was due to be delivered in 2023.
Following the insolvency of the previous owner Lars Windhorst and his Tennor Group, it was uncertain for a long time how things would continue with the FSG and Nobiskrug shipyards. At the end of January, clear plans for the future emerged: FSG went to the Rönner Group, which also operates the Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven and the SET in Tangermünde, among others, while Nobiskrug was taken over by the Bremen-based Lürssen Group.
