Several years behind schedule, the delivery of the “SeaRoad I” at the FSG shipyard in Flensburg is finally approaching. Construction of the RoRo ferry had been delayed due to the shipyard’s insolvency.
Flensburg-based FSG Shipyard has now christened its first vessel since being taken over by the Rönner Group: the “SeaRoad I,” which is scheduled for delivery next year.
The newbuild (yard number 784) will be the largest vessel in the Tasmanian shipping company’s fleet. Measuring 210 m in length and 29.3 m in width, it is designed to transport heavy cargo weighing up to 100 tons. Once completed in July 2026, the “SeaRoad I” will operate between Tasmania and the Australian mainland from September 2026.
“The ‘SeaRoad I’ will strengthen the SeaRoad fleet with high efficiency, flexibility, and speed,” FSG stated at the naming ceremony. “She is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including LNG propulsion, reflecting SeaRoad’s ongoing commitment to environmentally sustainable ship operations. We are grateful to our long-standing customer SeaRoad for their trust and excellent partnership throughout this project.”
The contract for the “SeaRoad I” was awarded to FSG in autumn 2021, with delivery originally planned for the fourth quarter of 2023. However, it was uncertain for a long time whether the ship could be completed at all: Like the Nobiskrug shipyard in Rendsburg, FSG belonged to the Tennor Group owned by Lars Windhorst. Insolvency was filed in December 2024. While Nobiskrug went to the Bremen-based Lürssen Group, FSG was taken over by the Rönner Group, which also operates the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven and the SET in Tangermünde.
After a lengthy standstill, work on the “SeaRoad I” was resumed in April 2025. “The resumption of the project is a significant moment for the shipyard and shows that the Flensburg site continues to have a future in the shipbuilding industry,” the shipyard announced at the time on “Brennstart 2.0”.
