Freighter detained in Ceuta after oil spill

The general cargo ship “Tony Stark” caused an oil spill off the Spanish port of Ceuta by leaking bunkers.

The ship was detained until a six-figure security deposit was paid. According to the port administration of Ceuta, more than a ton of fuel leaked into the water during a bunkering operation on 18 July. Traces of oil were found in several parts of the port and on surrounding beaches. Ceuta is a Spanish enclave on the coast of North Africa.

Shipping company of the “Tony Stark” must pay €120,000

The port authority set a security deposit of €120,000. Of this, €100,000 is for the pollution and a further €20,000 to cover the costs of the naval and air rescue services. The port authority also asked the captain of the ship to prepare a report on the causes of the accident.

As the regional news portal Ceuta Actualidad reported, the “Tony Stark” will be prevented from continuing its journey until the shipping company makes the payment. The freighter was originally expected to arrive in Manfredonia, Italy, on 22 July.

The “Tony Stark”, built in 1993, is a general cargo ship owned by the German shipping company Nauticore Shipping. The ship has a length of 145 m, a width of 25 and a carrying capacity of 15,346 dwt. It sails under the flag of Antigua & Barbuda.
